Agouti is a underappreciated type. Sometimes called "Wild Type" it is the natural coloring of rattus norvegicus in the wild.
You may hear some colors called "Agouti Type" or "Agouti Based" colors. This means that they only appear if one or more agouti allele is present in the rat. If the rat has no agouti allele present at all, then it will be a "Black Based" color, which means the individual hairs are solid in color with no banding. When agouti-based colors are in motion, they can be quite beautiful as the shading moves and changes with each step. They are rarely appreciated or well represented in photos because only a single moment of movement can be captured.

The basic bands of color for Agouti are gray at the base, a yellow/golden band, and a black tip. Agouti colors can have quite a bit of variety without deviating from being a normal Agouti rat. If the black tipping is longer or makes up more of the overall hair for the rat it will create the effect of a darker brown color overall, such as SQKN-Chocolate Dream in the header photo.
